Last year I did my first two commissioned embroidery hoops*, and I learned a great deal from the experience. It drove and inspired my goal to turn a creative hobby into something potentially lucrative. It also forced me to acknowledge that I may have some small, creative talent.
On the flip side, being paid adds a great deal of pressure and vulnerability. When someone is offering money in exchange for your creativity, the focus shifts from ‘I think this looks good” to “I hope they will think this looks good”. And that is a totally different ball game!
Completing this most recent piece without any added pressure reminded me of how much I love to be creative, and how much joy I get from making things for the people I love.
For those of you who are interested in seeing the process – I attempted to take a photo after every session to show the progress on this hoop. I’m sorry to report that I was not successful in my attempt, but I did take enough photos for you to get the general idea. There’s always next time!
*In the near future, I’ll be updating my website with information on how to request a commissioned hoop of your own!
